Halloween has its origins in the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated by the ancient Celts in Ireland, Scotland and other Celtic regions. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a period often associated with death. It was believed that, during this night, the spirits of the dead returned to Earth.

With the arrival of Christianity, the holiday became part of the Christian calendar. November 1 became All Saints’ Day, and the night before, October 31, was designated All Hallows’ Eve, which gradually evolved into Halloween.
